Doe Run is the world's largest integrated natural resource company focused on the mining, milling, smelting, recycling and fabrication of base metals. The Doe Run Company is owned by The Renco Group, Inc. a private company incorporated in New York City.
In 1997, Doe Run extended its operation outside the US for the first time by purchasing the La Oroya Metallurgical Complex, which was sold by the Peruvian government as part of Peru's industry privatization strategy. This transfer meant a great challenge for the company, for it assumed the commitment of making its operation not only competitive but also environmentally adequate. In 1998, Doe Run increased its presence in the country with the purchase of the Cobriza Mine, located in Huancavelica. In 2006, Doe Run selected Xstrata Technology’s ISASMELT™ as part of a major modernisation project at its La Oroya copper smelter. The project is expected to take 3 years, with commissioning in 2009.
